Windsor-Essex tourism bureau asks residents to stay home this summer

If you're planning to take a vacation this summer Tourism Windsor Essex Pelee Island has a simple suggestion — have you considered just staying home?

The tourism bureau is encouraging locals to take a "staycation" this summer to explore their own backyard for hidden gems.

"If we're buying local, we're experiencing local, we have that sense of pride of place of where we're from," explained the organization's vice-president Lynnette Bain. "We're helping to elevate the position of our region because as we become ambassadors for our own region, other people will take notice."

Sticking close to home also helps support the local tourism industry and jobs, she added.

The tourism office has created a Buy Local map to help discover homegrown fruit, vegetables and meat.
