Windsor Goodwill workers negotiating union contract

Employees at a Windsor thrift store will soon have a union contract.

Unifor Local 200 has signed up about 60 employees with Goodwill Industries. They work at the store on McDougall Avenue, two donation centres in the city's east end and one in LaSalle.

Goodwill CEO for the Essex, Kent and Lambton region Kevin Smith, said he has been in meetings with the union this week to negotiate a first contract.

"We want to make sure that we continue to grow in the Windsor area," he explained. "They have been very supportive with regards to our understanding and our needs. This is a first contract, so it's a little slower than most, but we're hoping the sooner, the better for everybody."

Smith says the bargaining is "going well." One of the issues is managing the size of the workforce around fluctuations in the volume of donations coming in.
