Bring back door-to-door delivery, Windsor-Tecumseh MP says

The MP for Windsor-Tecumseh says a revamped Canada Post would focus on delivering for small businesses while returning door-to-door delivery.

The House of Commons Standing Committee on Government Operations and Estimates met in Windsor Wednesday as part of ongoing consultations on Canada Post happening across the country.

Windsor-Tecumseh New Democrat Cheryl Hardcastle participated in the hearing. She told CBC News she believes there is still a major role for Canada Post.

"We heard from local people and we heard about local impacts, but we also heard about this national vision in this nation-building Crown corporation that has a mandate for public service," she said.

But Hardcastle acknowledged the Crown corporation does need to change.

She expects parcel deliveries and small-business customers to fill the gap left by the dropping number of letters delivered each year.

"You go from email to e-commerce, you still need this business," she said. "Small and medium sized businesses do rely on Canada Post and they do rely on daily pickup."
