Windsor labour activists honoured during awards ceremony

Awards given out to more than a dozen Windsor-area activists Thursday night sought to honour people whose efforts often go unrecognized.

The 2nd Annual Gary Parent Labour Activist Awards were handed out at the Ciociaro Club in Oldcastle.

One of the winners was Leilani Logronio, who works with CUPE Local 82 — the union which represents outside workers for the City of Windsor.

There are only 13 women filling 232 full-time jobs with the local, according to Logronio, whose honour came for her work in an area dominated by men.

"In pollution, we have one woman working there," she explained. "Environmental, we have two. In horticulture, we have four. In parks and rec, we have six. In facilities, we have none, and in forestry, we have none."

Logronio said despite being in the minority, women working with the city are treated equally.
