Windsor Regional Hospital's Paediatric Emergency Diversion Service Expands to Full-Week Coverage

Following a highly effective trial phase, Windsor Regional Hospital is gearing up to extend its Paediatric Emergency Diversion Service (PEDs) to operate seven days a week.

Thanks to financial support from the Ontario Ministry of Health, the pilot initiative was initiated in September 2023 to reduce wait times for pediatric patients in the Emergency Department (ED) while optimizing ED resources and alleviating overcrowding. Since its inception, over 400 young patients have benefited from the program, receiving more prompt and tailored care.

Operated by a specialized pediatric team, the service has been available at the Met Campus on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from 3 p.m. to 11 p.m., strategically coinciding with peak demand hours for pediatric care in the ED, where alternative services for pediatric patients are limited in the community.

With a new funding injection from the provincial government, effective March 1, 2024, the program will expand to provide coverage every day of the week. The increased funding will ensure the program's sustainability by covering operational expenses and securing dedicated staff to maintain its ongoing success.

Expanding the Paediatric Emergency Diversion Service underscores Windsor Regional Hospital's commitment to enhancing pediatric care accessibility and addressing the unique needs of its youngest patients in the region.
