Winnipeg reserve captain in hospital after army truck crash

An army reserve captain based in Winnipeg is in hospital with serious back injuries after a crash on the TransCanada Highway Friday night.

A spokesperson with the Canadian Armed Forces told CBC an army truck carrying two reserve soldiers was on its way to CFBShilo, a base 30 minutes east of Brandon, for a training exercise.

The truck hit a patch of black ice on the Le Salle bridge about halfway between Winnipeg and Portage la Prairie and crashed into a guard rail. The bus was hanging over the guard rail for a time, the army spokesperson said.

A bus full of soldiers heading to the same exercise arrived soon after and rescued the men from the truck.

One of the soldiers in the truck was taken to hospital and released. The other passenger, a reserve captain with the 17th Service Battalion, remains in hospital with what the army spokesperson said are serious back injuries.

The captain wasn't ejected from the vehicle in the crash and it isn't yet known how he sustained his injuries.
