Winnipeg offers residents email, text message notifications for emergencies

Winnipeggers have a new way to receive emergency information from the city.

Residents can sign up to receive notifications via text message or email through the City of Winnipeg's new WpgEmerg Alert Service.

The city will use the system to alert people during an emergency that requires immediate action, such as a mass evacuation or boil-water advisory.

"This new service will also allow us to reach people quickly and directly on their mobile devices," Jason Shaw, assistant chief of emergency management for the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service, said in a news release.

The city said it won't use the phone numbers to distribute any other information. Although the service is free, text message subscribers might be charged standard text messaging rates by their cellular providers, the city said in the release.

To sign up for the service, visit the City of Winnipeg website.
