Winnipeg police arrest man accused of pushing cop down stairs, splashing with hot coffee

Inmate died days after force used in arrest, police watchdog says

Winnipeg police have arrested a suspect who got away after a fight in which an officer was allegedly pushed down a set of stairs and splashed with hot coffee.

Police arrested a 33-year-old Winnipeg man in the 1700 block of Henderson Highway on Friday with the help of its K9 and tactical units.

Police said they saw the man, who was a suspect, in a taxi around 9:30 a.m. on July 10, so they followed the cab to a home on Redwood Avenue before trying to stop him.

The suspect tried to run into a nearby residence while an officer chased him, police said adding that's when the officer was splashed with hot coffee and pushed down a set of stairs.

During the altercation, a loaded firearm and set of handcuffs fell out of a bag that had been around the suspect's neck. The suspect tried to pass the bag to a woman who ran out of the home, who officers apprehended while the man ran away, police said.

Inside the purse, officers found around $11,500 worth of crack cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin and a substance believed to be fentanyl.
