Winnipeggers hold tribute for Nelson Mandela

People gather at Manitoba's Legislature in Winnipeg for a tribute service to Nelson Mandela.

A state funeral for Nelson Mandela will be held on Sunday in South Africa, but Saturday more than 100 people attended a service on the grand steps of the Manitoba Legislature in his honour.

People in Winnipeg held a special tribute for that country's first black president and anti-apartheid hero.

Kate Kehler was one of the people who came to the service with her two children.

"Someone who spoke...with such grace about hope given all that he's been through, he's somebody who deserves to be to be remembered, and I wanted to bring my children here to make sure they were a part of that," said Kehler.

Premier Greg Selinger and Justice Murray Sinclair, the chair of Canada's Truth and Reconciliation Commission were among the guests.

An African choir sang as videos of Mandela were shown on a large screen. Books of condolences were also available for those wanting to sign them.
