Wire found in Kraft Dinner box sparks investigation

A Halifax woman found a metal wire in a box of Kraft Dinner Tuesday, leading the company to investigate how it got there.

Christine Larson was making lunch for her two children and asked her 14 year old to make some Kraft Dinner for her youngest daughter.

Her daughter poured the pasta into the pot and spotted a metal wire amid the food.

Larson said she had two questions. "What the heck is that and why is it in the Kraft Dinner?"

She praised her sharp-eyed daughter for noticing the wire. "If it would have been smaller, or maybe stuck in one of the macaroni noodles, and we would have eaten it — it was really sharp. It could have done some damage."

She spoke to Kraft, but was underwhelmed by their first response.

"She [the Kraft representative] said they strive for good quality control, but sometimes these things happen. She apologized and she will be sending me a coupon for a new box of Kraft Dinner," Larson said.

It amounted to a $2 coupon. Larson doesn't want money, but thought it was worth more serious attention. "She seemed kind of flippant about it."

She spoke out to alert other people to the possible danger. She has a few other boxes in the cupboard, bought from the Sobeys in Fall River.

"I think she [Larson's 14 year old daughter] was a little bit disturbed as well," Larson said.

"She ended up not having the Kraft Dinner for lunch. Yeah, we didn't bother. So I think it kind of turned everyone's stomach a little bit."

When contacted by CBC News, Kraft spokeswoman Kathy Murphy got back in touch with Larson to start an investigation.

"For us to be able to get a sample of the wire she found and for her to send pictures to us will certainly help us in the investigation," Murphy said.

She said they'll try to find out how it got in there in the long line between the Kraft packaging plant to the store shelf.

"It's very uncommon," she said.
