Woman attacked at knifepoint then burned with unknown liquid during Hilton Head robbery

Police are searching for two suspects after a woman was robbed at knifepoint inside her car on Hilton Head Island and seriously injured by an “unknown liquid” that was thrown on her upper body.

The attack happened just before 10 p.m. Friday in the area of Pembroke Drive off William Hilton Parkway on north-end Hilton Head. Pembroke Drive is behind the plaza and parking lot that features a Walmart and Publix store northeast of the U.S. 278 split.

The woman was forcibly taken out of her vehicle, physically assaulted and suffered “significant burn injuries” from the unknown liquid, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office.

The woman was airlifted to a burn center at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, according to an online fundraiser organized for her medical expenses. In less than 24 hours, over $3,400 had been raised for the woman — about 70% of the campaign’s $5,000 goal.

Beaufort County woman Maria Hernandez was taken to the burn center at Charleston’s Medical University of South Carolina after two suspects poured an “unknown liquid” on her during an attempted armed robbery on her vehicle.
