Woman with concealed carry license hailed for shooting would-be robber

A 25-year-old woman with a concealed carry license is being lauded for shooting and killing a 19-year-old man who attempted to rob her at a bus station in Chicago.

According to surveillance video obtained by CBS Chicago, the woman was waiting at a bus stop alone early Tuesday morning. Police report that the man approached and pointed a gun at her in an attempt to rob her. The woman pulled out her firearm and shot him in the neck.

The man took her gun and ran, CBS Chicago reported. Police found him near train tracks. He was then taken to a hospital, where he died of his injuries.

“I think she did what she had to do, ’cause … crazy stuff happens like that out here every day,” neighborhood resident Breona Holmes told the outlet. “That’s self-defense.”

Another resident, Gator Sidney, told CBS Chicago the woman was a “hero.” “If she hadn’t have shot him, she probably would have gotten messed up,” he said. “I don’t feel sorry for the guy at all; I feel sorry for her.”

While police continue to question the woman, those on social media called her actions a win for the “good guy with a gun.”

Dana Loesch, a well-known gun rights advocate and spokesperson for the National Rifle Association, shared the story as well.

In 2018, 2,937 people were shot in Chicago, according to statistics from the Chicago Tribune. The Crime Prevention Research Center, a pro-gun rights think tank, reports that about 17.25 million concealed handgun permits were issued in the United States as of August 2018.
