A man is in custody after a woman was fatally stabbed in a Brampton park on Friday evening, Peel police say.

Police were called to Sparrow Park, in the area of Hummingbird Court and Cherrytree Drive, shortly before 6 p.m. for reports of an assault.

Officers found the woman suffering from "obvious signs of trauma" on the park's foot path, said Const. Tyler Bell, spokesperson for Peel Regional Police. She died at the scene.

Shortly after the woman was pronounced dead, police located the suspect about two kilometres away, Bell said. He could not say if the man fled on foot or in a vehicle. The man's age has not been released.

He also said the suspect and victim "were known to one other."

"At this time, there is no threat to the public," Bell said.

There was a heavy police presence in the park Friday night as officers investigated. Parts of the park are taped off.

Bell said there may have been others in the park at the time of the stabbing.

Homicide detectives are investigating, Bell said.

There's no word on charges.
