Toronto police say they are searching for a driver who allegedly fled on foot from the scene of a fatal crash on the Gardiner Expressway.

The collision happened shortly after 1:30 a.m. Sunday near the exit for Islington Avenue, police said in a news release.

The driver of a white 2015 Audi R8 sports car rear-ended a grey Nissan, causing the Nissan to hit the median guard rail and flip over.

A 58-year-old passenger ended up trapped inside the Nissan. She was extricated and rushed to hospital, where she was pronounced dead. The driver of the Nissan, 61, sustained non-life threatening injuries, police said.

The driver of the Audi fled the area on foot, according to police.

A number of other motorists stopped at the scene, and some apparently made recordings of the immediate aftermath of the crash, police added.

Investigators are appealing to those people to come forward, as well as anyone else who may have information about the collision.
