  • Brianna Smith recorded the moment she and her fiancée attempted to kill a spider in their garage, only to watch it explode with tiny baby spiders

  • Smith shared the footage in a now-viral TikTok with over 8.4 million views on the app

  • After the video stopped, Smith tells PEOPLE they attempted to drown the arachnids with cleaning materials and called pest control

Brianna Smith and her fiancée Sara Tofanelli lived out their nightmares when they found an unwelcome guest in their home — and this nightmare contained multitudes.

The couple couldn't imagine a worse situation than when they initially came face to face with the giant spider Tofanelli spotted in their garage. She beckoned Smith to come help handle the eight-legged enormity, which many people identified as a wolf spider in the comments on Smith's TikTok showing what happened when they tried to get rid of it.

Smith's video post — which garnered over 8 million views on the app — slows down the moment Tofanelli bravely lunged at the intruder with an expandable mop.

As soon as Tofanelli's mop made contact with the arachnid, it erupted with a host of baby spiders that skittered around as both women screamed behind the camera.

"Of all the outcomes that could have taken place, this was not one that came to mind," Smith wrote alongside the now-viral clip.

The chaos continued after recording too. Smith tells PEOPLE they moved quickly to find a way to handle the new army of spider offspring covering their garage floor.

"We both ran inside and grabbed whatever cleaner we could find to go back and drown whatever spiders we could see. After that, I went back in and had a full anxiety attack, she stayed in the garage trying to get them all," the South Carolina resident recalls, adding that they called a pest control service that came the following day.

According to The Spruce, female wolf spiders lay around 100 eggs after mating. After they've hatched, the offspring typically stay clung to their mother's back for a couple weeks, until they are large enough to leave her.

The Spruce also claims wolf spiders aren't aggressive and won't bite unless provoked

Even after taking a number of precautions, Smith refused to enter the garage for weeks. She says she's still paranoid about that part of their home, and she's typically the partner who handles all that crawl around the house.

"We’re both petrified of spiders. Usually, I’m the bug killer because every time she goes after a spider she misses, but I was not touching that thing," Smith says.

The duo didn't expect the recording of the moment to get so much attention online. They've enjoyed the comical comments, but they're not accepting any criticism for how they responded to the incident. Smith says she's not interested in catching and releasing any creatures invading her home.

"I did let everyone know, unless they’re paying my bills, it’s not my problem that they’re mad," Smith tells PEOPLE of the more negative responses to her TikTok. "We will continue to kill spiders ... just with a different method next time."

Most comments sympathized with the homeowners' screams of terror, but some social media users had similar stories to share.

"Right when I [saw] that spider I knew. Happened to me once. I jumped in the pool fully clothed," one person wrote.

Another commenter quipped, "Happened to me once and I accidentally forgot to grab my baby off the floor before I ran. Had to go back for him."

Says Smith, "Up until that point my biggest fear was a spider jumping at me. New fear was unlocked that night."
