Woman goes out to buy soup for sister and returns with huge Virginia lottery prize

An errand for her sister led Virginia resident Fawn Hughes to a massive lottery prize — one that she still can hardly believe.

Hughes stopped by a Food Lion grocery store in Richmond to grab some soup for her sister, she told lottery officials in a Feb. 8 news release.

While she was there, she decided to try her luck at the Virginia Lottery’s Cash 5 with EZ Match game, which she had never played before.

She won $148,560 after matching all five numbers in the Jan. 15 drawing.

“I was in shock!” she told lottery officials. “I’d never won anything that big before!”

Her sister came with her to cash out the prize, according to lottery officials. The odds of matching all five number are one in 749,398.

Hughes didn’t say what she planned to spend the winnings.
