Woman killed in crash near Lethbridge as snow and ice blanket southern Alberta
A woman was killed when her car slid into the back of a semi-truck near Lethbridge as winter descended on much of Alberta.
The 67-year-year woman was following the semi as it slowed down because of a multi-vehicle crash ahead on eastbound Highway 3 near Highway 509 on Sunday afternoon, RCMP said.
Her 2003 Buick Century was not able to slow down in time and skidded out on the icy road. The driver's side of the car hit the back of the trailer.
The woman driving the vehicle died at the scene.
In Calgary, Environment Canada issued a snowfall warning Sunday for a winter storm that dropped 6 cm on the city.
Between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. Sunday, there were 170 crashes in the city, 19 of which involved injuries.
From 6 p.m. Sunday to 3 a.m. Monday, there were 23 collisions, including six that resulted in injuries, police said.
Environment Canada is not predicting more snow for Calgary this week, but the temperature tumbled to –14 Monday with a forecast high of –11. The high for Tuesday is expected to be –18.
