Pedestrian in life-threatening condition after being struck by pickup truck downtown

Pedestrian, 79, dies after being hit by pickup truck downtown

A pedestrian remains in life-threatening condition at St. Michael's Hospital after being struck by a turning vehicle at Bay Street and Adelaide Street West on Thursday, Toronto police say.

The pedestrian, a woman in her 50s or 60s, was hit by an eastbound GMC pickup turning right onto Bay Street, said Const. Clint Stibbe of Toronto Police Traffic Services.

Police efforts to identify the pedestrian were delayed, as her purse and identification were trapped beneath one of the truck's wheels while a police collision reconstruction team worked at the scene. The woman was identified after police were able to move the truck, and her next of kin have been notified, said Stibbe.

The intersection of Bay Street and Adelaide Street was blocked to traffic during the police investigation, but reopened shortly after 2:00 p.m.

A second collision took place at the same intersection later on Thursday, when a TTC bus ran over a pedestrian's foot. That pedestrian was transported to hospital in unknown condition, said Stibbe.
