3 year-old in hospital after car hits family in Markham

A 3-year old boy was in non-life threatening condition at the Hospital for Sick Children on Friday after he, his mother and his brother were struck by a car in Markham.

The family was hit just after they got off a bus near Kennedy Road and Clayton Drive.

"The car came out of nowhere," said Judy Bhanjan who lives close to where the crash happened and said she was alerted by a big bang.

"One boy was dragged, another one was thrown," Bhanjan said.

Eye witness William Regis described the aftermath of the crash.

"There was blood on the street, one of the kids was bleeding," said Regis.

York Regional Police say the car was travelling behind the bus before striking all three pedestrians.

"The cause of the crash is under investigation. It's going to take us quite some time to figure it out what happened here," said Const. Andy Pattenden.

Church also hit

After hitting the family, the silver sedan smashed into another vehicle, then continued down Clayton, before slamming head on into the Milliken Wesleyan Methodist church.

People on the scene said the 67-year-old driver of the car told police her brakes were not working. Police could not confirm if that was the case.

The driver stayed on the scene and was charged with dangerous driving.
