A worker who went missing after flooding at a construction site in Mississauga on Friday is dead, Peel police say.

Police were called to the site, located at Hurontario Street and Burnhamthorpe Drive, for a report of flooding at about 3:30 p.m.

Several workers were at the site when a pipe ruptured and filled a chamber with water, according to police.

All but one worker was able to get out. Fire crews pumped the water out to enable a search, but police said the man was pronounced dead shortly after being located after midnight. He was 54 years old.

Roads in the immediate vicinity, where Peel Region said watermain and sanitary sewer improvement work was underway, have since reopened.

Peel police say the Ministry of Labour has now taken over the investigation and is looking into the circumstances that led to the man's death.
