At Money in the Bank on Sunday (May 19) Drew McIntyre will be one of eight WWE Superstars hoping to climb the ladder and take the briefcase, leading to a championship match whenever he choses.

If he's successful it will be a huge moment for the Scottish Superstar, who worked his way back to WWE in 2017 after being released from his contract three years earlier.

Drew's return to the company saw him win the NXT Championship and eventually move to the Raw roster, facing off against Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 35.

Drew will also be hoping that this year's Money in the Bank match (which also includes Ricochet, Baron Corbin, Finn Balor, Ali, Andrade, Sami Zayn and Randy Orton), goes a lot differently than the one he had in 2010, which saw him get knocked out in the middle of the ring.

Recalling the scary moment, Drew told Digital Spy and others: "Kofi [Kingston] came off the ladder with the boom drop, he landed on my chest, through the table, slid straight through me and caught me on the side of my head. I was out for a second.

"As I opened my eyes I was wondering why everybody was in my bedroom. I was looking around and it took me a second to realise, 'Wait a minute, this is not my bedroom, wait a minute, I'm at a wrestling show, wait a minute, this is Money in the Bank'.

"It was a scary moment but thankfully the company has protocols for things like that. I had to do my impact testing to make sure I was okay and thankfully I was," Drew added. "So that's my memory of it, 'Why's everyone in my bedroom?'"

If Drew were to win the briefcase and successfully challenge either WWE Champion Kofi Kingston or Universal Champion Seth Rollins, he would become the first Scotsman to hold the title. But with NXT now having its own UK brand, there are plenty of Drew's fellow countrymen on his heels.

"I'm always keeping an eye on Gallus [the NXT UK stable consisting of Wolfgang and the Coffey brothers Joe and Mark]," Drew said. "I took Wolfgang's first wrestling lesson about 16 or 17 years ago."

But Drew also has his eye on the current WWE United Kingdom Champion Walter, one of the few Superstars who can match Drew in size – and he knows the idea of him and Walter going toe-to-toe would be a dream match for many fans.

"If I was to pick an opponent that might be interesting for the fans to watch I'd say myself and Walter," Drew said. "It might be a bit of a spectacle for everybody to watch and the story is simple – two big lads battering each other."

WWE Money in the Bank 2019 takes place on Sunday, May 19 at 7pm ET/4pm PT (Midnight on Sunday into Monday, May 20 in the UK) at the XL Center in Hartford, Connecticut.
