At Thursday night's Canadian Online Publishing Awards (COPA), Yahoo Canada News was honoured to receive top prize for Best Mobile Solution for its mobile news app, the Yahoo News Digest.

The app, which launched in Canada in May 2014, features summaries of the day's top stories along with related videos, photos, links to feature-length reads and other related charts and information. It is delivered to users twice a day on their mobile devices.

Chase Kell, co-lead of the News Digest team in Canada alongside Allan Shifman, says that he's thrilled the app is receiving recognition, because he thinks it's something everyone can benefit from.

"I love how the Yahoo News Digest has dared to do something different," Kell said. "In the past it was all about simply getting all of your content onto the mobile platform, and I’m proud to work on a product that is attempting to reinvent the way mobile content is consumed."

Thomas Bink, Managing Editor for Yahoo Canada News, accepted the award with the News Digest team at the Phoenix Concert Theatre, extending particular thanks to the creators and leads of the app, Nick D'Aloisio (known for creating Summly in 2011) and Max Zimbert.

"The News Digest is a testament to Yahoo's pledge to create unique products that inform, entertain and delight users," Bink said. "It's an honour for our peers to endorse that."

Also on stage to accept the award were Kell, Shifman, and News Digest editors Victor Ferreira and Jonathan Rothman.

The Yahoo News Digest has previously been recognized as an Apple Design Award Winner for 2014. It is available around the world in U.S., U.K. and International editions.

The Canadian Online Publishing Awards are an annual event held to recognize excellence in online digital media across traditional media, new media and business categories.
