Yellowknife to hold vigil Friday to honour victims of Manchester bombing

There will be a vigil in Yellowknife on Friday evening to honour the 22 people killed in Manchester, England, earlier this week.

Alternatives North says it's organizing the event to stand in solidarity with the people of Manchester. The attack happened at an arena shortly after singer Ariana Grande wrapped up a concert, killing many young girls and teenagers.

"A lot of people here were very heavily impacted by what happened over there," said organizer Nancy Vail.

"It could be our children that that's happening to. We want them to know that we care."

Local politicians and several religious leaders plan to speak about what the community can do to be strong and work against these acts of violence.

"These things are happening that are affecting us so negatively but we believe in peace," Vail said. "The message that we're hoping to get across is 'We are stronger together.'"

Alternatives North plans to take photos of Friday's vigil and send them to newspapers in Manchester to show their solidarity.

The vigil will be held at 5:30 p.m. outside the Greenstone Building in Yellowknife. Vail said there will be live music and flowers handed out.
