The N.W.T. RCMP say they have charged a Canadian Armed Forces reservist with luring a child.

Craig Routery, a 60-year-old warrant officer with 1 Canadian Ranger Patrol Group, was arrested Monday while working at a youth training session in the Yukon at the Whitehorse Cadet Training Centre.

The charge comes after a months-long investigation by members of the RCMP's Internet Child Exploitation Unit (ICE). That investigation, which began in March, allegedly turned up communication between Routery and a youth in the N.W.T.

In a news release Thursday, the RCMP said ICE and the Yukon Major Crimes Unit conducted searches in Yellowknife and Whitehorse, and seized several electronic devices.

The RCMP said Routery was involved with the Junior Canadian Rangers program.

"While the investigation and charge are related to online offences, the nature of his employment places him in a position of trust and authority over youth," the news release stated.

Routery was released on bail Wednesday with conditions not to contact anyone under 16, and not to go to parks, swimming areas, daycares, schools, playgrounds, public libraries or community centres where people under 16 might be present.

He also can't work or volunteer anywhere where he might be in a position of authority over someone under 16.

Routery is set to appear in court on Aug. 20 in Yellowknife.

RCMP said ICE is still continuing its investigation and believes there may be more victims. They said anyone who wants to share information should contact their local RCMP or Crime Stoppers.
