A dramatic and icy rescue was caught on video this week after a group spent over three hours helping a horse that got trapped in a freezing marsh.

Cody Scott, 20, noticed his neighbour’s horse struggling to stay afloat in Lloyd Creek in Rimbey, Alberta. The 1500-pound Clydesdale was sinking into the murky water and Scott told CTV News that her breathing was becoming more and more laboured.

“It was a fight with time,” he said.

Scott called in a few friends to help him get the horse out. At first they tried to pull the horse out with a rope, then with a snowmobile. But the rope snapped and the rescuers decided to take a new approach. Finally, she found the strength to lift one of her legs out of the water and then the group helped her get her other front leg out so she was able to pull herself onto the frozen ice. The whole rescue operation was caught by a GoPro Scott was wearing.

“It was fairly, ridiculously cold, and to be honest, I don’t know how the horse made it,” said Scott, who has spent a lot of time around horses.

The horse was checked out by a veterinarian and returned to her owners. She is expected to make a full recovery.
