Youth soccer season cancelled

The East Elgin Youth Soccer (EEYS) Board of Directors in a meeting last week decided to cancel coming the soccer season due to the pandemic.

The soccer club generally sees about 800 registrants in 54 recreational teams play every year. The season usually starts the week of June 1st.

“We are all unpaid volunteers and recognize the disappointment this will cause for some. We did not feel we could meet all the likely requirements with the resources we had available,” said EEYS President Jeff Robinson.

The soccer season was also cancelled last year due to the pandemic. Mr. Robinson said challenges included mixing kids from different schools on one team, wearing face masks during game play, and arranging physical distancing for spectators.

All EEYS games are generally played in the soccer fields at Columbus Park, which are currently closed. Mr. Robinson said the fields may open depending on provincial COVID-19 rules, but there will be no organized play this year.
