YouTuber reveals how easy it is to sound like Chainsmokers

If you’ve ever thought radio-friendly EDM group The Chainsmokers’ hits Closer and Something Like This sound eerily alike, then this new viral video might just put your suspicions to rest.

YouTuber John Fassold says he’s cracked the formula to writing Chainsmokers songs, and in a four-and-a-half minute video, he reveals it is probably much simpler than you might think. Pick a few chords that are next to each other, choose some lyrics about “how hard it is to be white and in love” and select a central theme — and you have a Chainsmokers song. It really is that simple.

Fassold was able to almost effortlessly weave champagne, oak, Febreze and even Tide detergent into Chainsmokers-style songs. He also managed to put together a full-length track in just an hour.

Although The Chainsmokers say their lyrics contain a lot of who they are, the similarities between their latest hits is something critics have picked up on as well.

USA Today slammed the duo’s new album Memories…Do Not Open as possibly one of the worst of the year for among other things being “a moody collection of tracks that stick to the same white-bread sonic cues, touches of piano and/or acoustic guitar strums, segueing into an Avicii-lite drop.”

Regardless of what the critics have to say, The Chainsmokers are riding high. Memories…Do Not Open debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, and Closer was number one for 12 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 — breaking several records along the way.
