YouTuber wanders around Tokyo's Shibuya like he's in Grand Theft Auto
A YouTube channel in Japan has made an excellent video of someone exploring the Tokyo district Shibuya like it's a Grand Theft Auto game.
Anyone who has played one of these games will immediately recognise the movement, camera work and event all the 'NPCs' posing in the background.
"GTA/Yakuza/MGS: Video game moments in real life Shibuya chronicles" is a clever pastiche of how open-world sandbox video games like GTA or Yakuza play out, just in the real world.
The camera work alone is perfect, basically taken right out of a video game and that alone deserves praise as it wonderfully captures the feeling of rotating the camera with a joystick.
It begins with the character 'waking up' in the streets of Shibuya and immediately comes to terms with how to move, run and crouch. Even down to the inevitable turn to 'violence' just like you'd play any other game, right?
But since this is real-life it looks incredibly jarring to see what is essentially perfectly acted-out video-game controls, which look like they even have an input-read delay, especially when he's running and turning.
Check out the full video below and prepare to be amazed. Be warned, there is some shooting in it, but it's all completely fake, just a heads up.
The channel behind this is marvel is called 'KMZW Isolation' and in the past, they have typically done dance tutorials, but it looks like they're branching out now.
As you see, the story mode begins by following our protagonist search for clues, bump into people and the video even has a nifty little overlay, showing options the protagonist is choosing from like searching for items or interacting.
From then onwards, the character does typical video-game actions, like inspecting a statue (twice, the second time is accidental of course), goes on to pick up 'key items', change clothes at a locker and run around into people being a general nuisance.
One of the crowning moments of the video is the simulated 'follow this character' quest, which hilariously encapsulates the whole experience; from hiding in a box as you'd do in Metal Gear Solid to being spotted almost immediately and getting gunned down.
Not to mention the absolutely glorious fight scenes which are all wonderfully choreographed.
The story ends with the protagonist gaining a new party member and a note in Japanese states it will “be continued in Chapter Two”.
Hopefully, we won't have to wait too long to see the next chapter.
