Yukon woman on Team Brazil at world curling championships

A woman who immigrated from South America to the Yukon is now at the Mixed Doubles World Curling Championships in Scotland playing for Team Brazil.

Born in Brazil, Aline Lima Goncalves had never heard of curling until she moved to the Yukon. Goncalves slid her first rock down the ice just three years ago at the curling club in Whitehorse.

"I started playing in 2011 and since then I became hooked to the sport. I am always playing or practising doing one of those things."

This week Goncalves is in Dumfries, Scotland, playing for the Brazilian national team.

"I know for sure that we don't have a lot of chances of winning anything, but for us it is a very great learning experience so that is basically why I am going — to really get some learning done."

Goncalves met her teammate for the first time last week and their "learning experience" will begin in earnest when they'll meet up with powerhouse competitors like the U.S. and Scottish national teams on Thursday.
