2 women charged with extortion of ex-mayor of Laval, Que.

Two women have been charged in connection with an alleged prostitution scandal that led to the resignation of the interim mayor of Laval, Que., almost one month ago.

Alexandre Duplessis stepped down from office on June 28, after news broke that he had allegedly hired an escort to come to his chalet in the Laurentian region of Quebec.

Julie Cadieux, 32, and Nathalie Paquin, 44, are charged with extorting or attempting to extort Duplessis, through threats, accusations, menaces or violence.

Both women are also charged with breaking and entering, as well as conspiracy.

Cadieux is also charged with possession of methamphetamines with intent to traffic.

In June, Duplessis denied soliciting or receiving sexual favours from a prostitute.

"I never solicited, I never received anything of a sexual nature," he said. "I never received [anything] of a sexual nature and I never received favours of a sexual nature."
