Arrest made in beating death on Whyte Avenue

A 19-year-old man has been arrested and charged with manslaughter in connection with a fatal assault early Saturday on Whyte Avenue.

Raad Hamza, 24, died in hospital hours after he was beaten outside The Billiard Club on 82nd Avenue and 105th Street.

The Medical Examiner conducted an autopsy Monday and ruled the death to be a homicide. The cause of death was head trauma.

Earlier this week, homicide detectives made a public appeal for witnesses to come forward with information.

Det. Dale Johnson said that as many as six people were on the sidewalk at the the time of the beating on Saturday and may have seen what happened.

The death is Edmonton’s 27th homicide of the year.
