4 Northern teachers honoured with prime minister awards

Three teachers from N.W.T. and one from Nunavut received Prime Minister's Awards for Teaching Excellence this week.

Kristen Sawyers, who teaches Grade 6 at Simon Alaittuq school in Rankin Inlet, Nunavut, received a certificate of excellence.

"It's really exciting," she said. "I've met 16 educators from across Canada and we have had just an amazing experience."

Sawyers has been teaching in the North for eight years. She has taught previously in Whale Cove, Baker Lake and Arctic Bay.

Along with the certificate, she received a financial award of $5,000 which she'll share with her school.

Angelina Fabien, who teaches the Chipewyan language at Deninu School in Fort Resolution, also received a certificate of excellence.

Lea Lamoureux and Neil Penney, who teach at KawTay Whee school in Dettah, received certificates of achievement.
