Halifax Public Libraries named Asa Kachan as its new chief librarian and chief executive officer Tuesday morning.

Kachan has a master’s degree in library and information science from the University of Western Ontario.

She previously worked in Saskatchewan’s public libraries, and was president of the Saskatchewan Library Association.

"I am drawn to the diversity and relevancy within Halifax Public Libraries," said Kachan. "We have 14 branches serving many unique communities and a new Central Library that is creating local, national, and worldwide interest. I have an opportunity to play a part in transforming Halifax in new and interesting ways. That is exciting."

In May, Judith Hare announced she would retire from the post on Sept. 30.

Kachan starts work Nov. 1. The Central Library should open this fall.
