Assiniboine Park offers movies under the stars

For those who can't get enough of free outdoor movies, Assiniboine Park is offering up yet another option this summer.

Movies in the Park runs the first four Fridays in August and features eight blockbuster features on a cinema-style 27-foot wide outdoor screen at the Lyric Theatre.

“Movies in the Park was a hit when we launched it in the summer of 2011 and has grown in popularity year after year,” said Laura Cabak, manager of brand and communications for Assiniboine Park Conservancy.

“[This year] will be no exception. With animated, family-friendly favourites like Frozen to blockbusters like The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, there is something for everyone.”

If Fridays don't work for your free movie calendar, you can try the new pop-up drive-in movie theatre that will be held every Saturday, Aug. 9-30, in the CityPlace parking lot downtown.

Shows start at sundown and are free for those who come by bike, transit, or on foot. Admission is $10 per vehicle.

The movie lineup includes:

- Aug. 9 — The Dark Knight

- Aug. 16 — Zoolander

- Aug. 23 — The Avengers

- Aug. 30 — The Matrix or Terminator 2: Judgment Day

If the weekends are absolutely a no-go for you, there's always Tuesday.

Movies on Memorial will be shown at sundown in Memorial Park, Aug. 5-26, at the corner of Broadway and Memorial Boulevard.

The lineup includes:

- Aug. 5 — Forrest Gump

- Aug. 12 — Karate Kid

- Aug. 19 — Back to the Future

- Aug. 26 — The Princess Bride or Toy Story

People are asked to vote online to decide the Aug. 26 film.
