Barrhaven quarry patrons targeted in Ottawa police crackdown
People who trespass to dive off a cliff into the Barrhaven Quarry received a rude, $65 welcome as police target those who use the private area as a swimming hole.
The quarry, owned by Mattamy Homes, has been used for swimming for decades despite the "No Trespassing" signs posted there.
Recent activity has been a little more rowdy, though, leading to more than 200 calls to police over the last couple of years, Ottawa police say.
People from as far as Toronto arrived at the quarry on Sunday to cool off, but instead left with a hole burning in their pocket.
Police handed out $65 trepassing tickets to those caught at the quarry.
"We're receiving complaints of loud partying: bush parties, fireworks, a lot of littering going on, and it's basically a quality of life issue," said Ottawa police Insp. Michel Marin.
Resident boosts security
Nearby resident John Caris said he has been fed up with the activity and began to fear for his own safety.
Caris went as far as installing a security system, including a camera, which he said caught a few activities he would rather not have seen.
"We've had drunk people lying in the middle of the road. We've had drunk people defecating on my front lawn," he said.
Caris also called 911 after he confronted some people car surfing near his driveway.
