MPs want new rules for Parliamentary cameras

Instead of debating the economy, health care, or how they could better serve their constituents, 12 MPs took time out of their busy schedules to discuss how they looked on television.

Last Tuesday, the House Affairs Committee convened to look at broadcasting guidelines in light of complaints by Members that guidelines respecting the broadcasting of the Chamber had not been complied with recently.

The complaints were no doubt instigated after several MPs were recently caught on camera doing embarrassing things.

Who could forget the widely viewed YouTube video in November, showing Conservative MP Rob Anders falling asleep during question period in the House of Commons?

And earlier this month, NDP MP Jonathan Genest-Jourdain was caught on video while checking out his hair on his iPhone, and then falling asleep as his NDP colleague addressed parliament.

But instead of addressing the root problem of unprofessional conduct in the House, MPs appear to want to hide from taxpayers.

As reported in the Hill Times, several MPs at the committee meeting called for new measures that would mitigate any future embarrassments.

Conservative MP Tom Lukiwski complained about wide angle camera shots:

"It seemed that the wide-angle shots were being employed a little more frequently than just in [Question Period] and votes; where if a single Member's standing up to debate and there's a bunch of empty chairs around him, there's a wide angle shot that illustrates that," Lukie

"I think that kind of concerns a lot of Members. That if that was happening, it doesn't look good frankly for Parliament."

In post-meeting interview with the Hill Times, Lukiwski also threw his support behind his colleague Harold Albrecht's idea of adding a red light to the cameras so that MPs know which camera was being used.

"Several people have said that, yeah, they would find it a better environment if they knew when— and that's all I'm saying—they just would like to know when they're going to be on camera."

So, what exactly are MPs doing when they're not on camera?

What do you feel about this article?

Hey MPs-we pay your salary and like any BOSS anywhere I am-we are entitled to look in on you and see what you are doing. The names of every MP trying to change this should be posted so we can decide if they should hold an office next year.Jerks.

Ha! Do what you want with House cameras. I would like House attendance published weekly and therefore I see who shows up for work.

I still vote for Rick Mercer's suggestion to have a webcam on each of the MP's table. So members of their constituents can log in and see what their MP is doing during House sessions.

These people get paid big bucks, and are elected public servants..stay awake..drink coffee do whatever..but their behaviour should be transparent.
      • visvanathan s 3 months ago
i don't think it's that big a deal...they've been doing it since Confederation....it's only the cameras that out them now...i imagine you would have just as much trouble staying alert and awake through some of those "chat" sessions in Parliament, you know...the ones, where lots of invective gets slung around and nothing substantive gets done....try and stay awake through that....

not good to drink tons of coffee....not healthy.
      • kubbingj 2 months ago
May not be healthy but this guy was checking out his hair just before he fell asleep...I don't think he cares about his health...and frankly I don't either..the point I'm making is he's young, he's and elected official..he should get enough sleep...and stay awake...and whether or not the subject is boring ...it is his job to stay awake...the other thing my son noted was...notice all the empty seats around him...where are the rest...they are paid to be there but their seats are vacant.

I want to know why their expense accounts are not transparent, nor is their attendance. I also think the public should be informed on the fact that they only have to complete one term in office to get a $55,000/yr pension, with inflation added yearly, while they now want the public to work until they are 67 before they can earn half of that... without the cost of inflation considered. Sickening.

If they clean up their act they would not have anything to worry about. I have often heard them said about public video and the new internet law "If you are not doing anything wrong you have nothing to worry about."

If I got caught sleeping at my job, I would be fired. Now these idiots want a wake up call before the camera's on them! #$%$

Leave the camera's alone. You screw up you get caught. Simple as that. We pay them $100,000.00 some thousand a year to work for us & that is extremely good wages, so they should be working not sleeping or anything else they should not be doing. Point is: If they are ashamed of it on camera they shouldn't be doing it. Camera's stay.
    • OWiseOne  •  3 months ago
No your not going to hide from the cameras people. Here's how it goes YOU work for US. WE pay YOUR salary. Thie means anytime your in the House we can watch all we want. Lots of people put up with cameras at work, suck it up and do your jobs.

Just like the bill C-30 they are trying to introduce- spying on us online. Same thing MPs. Get a taste for being spyed on all the time. Good on them. If I was caught on Facebook at work, I would not have a job for long. Back to earth MPs!

The camera keeps catching the liars......REALLY.......you know.........the ones who are incapable of standing to answer a question without doing up one more button on the suit jacket.
    • Dan  •  Winnipeg, Manitoba  •  2 months ago
Anything to hide their ineptitude. This is the best Canada has to offer? What an embarrassment. They should be ashamed, but they are politicians, therefore they have no shame. They want to be able to look at any Canadians internet activity, all the time, with no warrant, yet they cannot stand the thought of being exposed on camera as the buffoons they are. No double standard here, folks...

You can run but you cannot hide.
We pay you, you work for us or are suppoesed to do so.
We are entitled to watch you and see that you are not slacking.
Get working you overpaid, lazy jerks and start trying to help run our country.
    • Elaine  •  Toronto, Ontario  •  2 months ago
Guess they don't want us to see them napping, texting or their absenteeism. We're paying them to conduct the nation's business not to pose in front of a camera.

    • Jtag  •  2 months ago
Make them resign without a pension for NOT doing their job .They want to raise the old age security to 67 so i suggest that they should not be entitled to their pension until age 67 .
