Toronto police take down man in Tim Hortons

The man found violating his house arrest terms led cops on a foot chase into the coffee shop

Canadians will wait in long lines to get their Tims, but one man did something far more drastic.

A Toronto man, who was violating his house arrest, was spotted by police on Tuesday and during a foot chase the man ran into a crowded Tim Hortons, reports the Toronto Star. Maybe he thought he could get a quick double double or a box of timbits for jail. Or maybe he thought he could somehow declare sanctuary. After all, coffee and donuts are a bit of a religion.

The man resisted arrest and an officer used pepper spray while at least seven other officers helped detain the man.

While a story of a man being arrested for violating house arrest isn't that strange, a lot of weird stuff does seem to happen at Tim Hortons. The odds are good considering there are more than 3,000 locations across Canada.

Last month a baby was born in a Windsor Tims bathroom. The baby was nicknamed Timbit and the lucky kid will receive free Timbits for life.

Also last month, an American Islamic militant fighting in Somalia talked about how much he missed Tim Hortons in an online autobiography. Alabama-born Omar Hammami lived in Toronto for a year before travelling to Somalia to join Al Shabab, an al Qaeda-linked group fighting for control of the African country.

In January, a court ruled Canada's public nudity laws are constitutionally valid after a nude-rights activist was found appearing naked in public. He was spotted nude at a Tim Hortons drive thru.

Also in January, a hospital in B.C. was forced to use their Tim Hortons store as a triage area to deal with an over-burden emergency room.

This past October, an Alberta woman sued the chain claiming she was seriously sickened from drinking "toxic" iced coffee.

Also last October, about 20 people staged a sit-in at a southwestern Ontario location after the store asked a lesbian couple to leave the property when they were seen kissing outside.

Despite all this, we can't seem to get enough, as the coffee shop reported a 10 per cent increase in sales during the first quarter of this year.
