Montreal Mayor Michael Applebaum reportedly to resign in public address

Michael Applebaum faces 14 criminal charges, including fraud against the government, breach of trust, conspiracy and municipal corruption

Michael Applebaum is expected to become the second mayor to resign in eight months, one day after being charged in a massive corruption investigation.

Applebaum is scheduled to speak at 3:30 p.m. ET, at which time sources the Montreal Gazette and CJAD 800 News report he will announce his resignation.

Applebaum was named mayor earlier this month after his predecessor Gerald Tremblay stepped down in November amid corruption allegations leveled at his party.

Laval, Que., mayor Gilles Vaillancourt also stepped down in November and was later charged with fraud and gangsterism.

Applebaum, who was arrested on Monday, has been charged in his own controversy, stemming back to his time as the mayor of Montreal's Côte-des-Neiges–Notre-Dame-de-Grâce region.

The province's anti-corruption unit alleges that Applebaum and two other public officials acted improperly in relation to two real estate projects between 2006 and 2011.

Applebaum faces 14 charges, including fraud against the government, breach of trust and municipal corruption.

Quebec Premier Pauline Marois immediately called for his resignation, as did Jean-François Lisée, the province's minister responsible for Montreal.

The topic of Applebaum's afternoon address has not been confirmed, but the Gazette reports he is expected to resign.

CJAD further reports there are hints council will be ready to choose a replacement as early as next Tuesday.
