Pizza and bacon aromatherapy? Teen sells ‘manly’ candles

Move over vanilla and lavender. Bacon-scented candles are now a "man-friendly" alternative to your sweet aroma.

Ohio teenager Hart Main is not an obvious candidate to be a trailblazer in the candle industry. The 13-year-old boy from Marysville launched ManCans, a line of "manly" candles, out of his family's home after complaining about the "girly" scented candles his sister was selling for a school fundraiser.

His bright idea? Create candles that smell like things men like: Pizza, bacon, coffee, campfire, sawdust and fresh cut grass.

Meet Hart and his ManCans in the video below:

With a $100 investment — funded by a paper route — Hart started his own company, inventing new scents as his mother poured the hot wax into used soup cans.

(Hart isn't allowed to pour the wax as he might damage the hardwood floors. He is, after all, a typical eighth grader.)

He divides his scent selections into three categories: things men eat, things men like and things men can do. The resulting products include a wide variety of man-friendly scents, such as New Mitt, a fresh leather scent, Grandpa's Pipe, a fresh tobacco blend and Gear Head, a candle that will transport you to the auto garage.

New York-style Pizza, "Money to Burn" and Cracker Jack scents are the newest additions to his collection.

Hart has sold over 500 $5 ManCans so far, each made in empty soup cans — the soup itself was donated to a local soup kitchen. With the profits, he's been able to buy himself a new bicycle.

Now the 13-year-old boy is swamped with orders (400 and counting) thanks to national exposure of his niche product. Hart posted this "I'm still a kid" apology to those who are awaiting the smelly products:

"Please be patient, these are still made in my kitchen, and I still have to go to school during the day. : ( "

According to the Toronto Star, he's now working on a dirt-scented candle.
