Get out and make a splash for World Oceans Day on June 8th!

Saturday, June 8th is World Oceans Day, so let's join in with the rest of the planet in celebrating not only the birthplace of all life on this planet, but also the resource that continues to sustain us, support us, and sometimes even help to protect us from ourselves.

Sometimes it's easy to forget that we're all part of a minority on the planet, but we are; the land most of us spend most of our time on accounts less than 30% of the planet's surface. The rest is ocean, and it does a lot for us that we might never think about or realize. Apart from the obvious — holding 97% of Earth's water — oceans are working hard for us everyday by doing things like generating half of the oxygen we breathe, regulating our climate and weather, and providing the main food source for more than 3.5 billion of us land-dwellers.

So it seems only fitting that we have a day to give something back.

There are events planned worldwide for this weekend that are published on the World Oceans Day website, including ones in Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver. Closer to home — in fact, not leaving your couch if you don't want to — you can donate to support conservation or take some time to read about ocean-friendly seafood options (is your tuna really tuna?), or the comic book Big Tuna Troubles, care of David Suzuki.

The world's oceans have supported us from the beginning; it seems only fair we should take at least one day out of the year to say thank you.
