What happens to all the flowers from the royal visit?

By now, anyone who's been following Prince William and Kate Middleton's royal visit to Canada might be curious about what happens to all the flowers they receive when they mingle with the public.

No, they're not being loaded on a plane to follow the royal couple back to England. But, they are being put to good use here in Canada.

Kevin MacLeod, the the man who planned Will and Kate's Canadian visit, reveals that the gifts eventually make their way to brightening the lives of others.

By now, you may have noticed him following close behind the couple and taking bouquets from Kate's arms. Once enjoyed by the royals, the gifts are traditionally "passed back" to MacLeod and redistributed to those in need of a little joy.

"There are many flowers, but as a rule — and it is something we truly respect — the flowers are shared with nursing homes and hospitals to enliven the life of those who are bedridden or who are ill. But what we do is remove all the cards and each and every one is read by a member of the Royal Family," MacLeod tells Global News.

MacLeod became so well-acquainted with carrying armloads of flowers from Queen Elizabeth II's visit to Canada last year that Prime Minister Stephen Harper's wife Laureen has dubbed him "Canada's outstanding flower catcher".
