Swapping is the new buying with the Swap-O-Matic vending machine

It's a vending machine that won't take your spare change.

In New York City, the Swap-O-Matic is free. The machine "playfully tries to remind us that reusing and recycling can be just as fun as buying something new," the official site says.

The Swap-O-Matic operates on a credit systemand the honour system. Register with your email address on the machine's touchscreen and earn points for donating items. Use those points to "purchase" others items donated to the machine. Or just make a direct swap.

"The Swap-O-Matic is intended to be both a solution and critical response to the consuming, corporate culture that we live in today. Its core function is to support the reuse and recycling of products through swapping among participants," the official site explains.

Only one Swap-O-Matic currently exists. It has relocated from the Parsons The New School For Design to it's current spot at the Ample Hills Creamery, a Brooklyn ice cream shop.

Lina Fenequito, the primary creator and designer of the innovative vending machine, hopes to expand the project soon.
