Should Pamela Wallin face criminal charges?

Senator Pamela Wallin has agreed to repay the $120,000 to $140,000 she owes in improperly-claimed travel expenses, but she's not particularly happy about it.

In a statement Monday late Monday afternoon, Wallin slammed the audit process, calling it a "flawed and unfair process." She says that the auditors wrongly applied 2012 rules on senators' travel retroactively, flagging expenses that had been previously allowed and approved by the Senate finance committee.

But the Canadian public isn't quite as lenient. After Yahoo! News posted the story to Facebook, a surprising number of commenters said Wallin should be punished — with jail time.

"Justice will be served when she has paid back every dime, and had a substantial additional criminal penalty levied against her just like any other Joe or Jane Canadian would have if they outright stole money from the government," said Dennis Greer. "Where's the deterrent? Steal all you want, and if you get caught, just give it back and all is good."

"Well, if I stole $140K in falsely claimed expenses, at the very least, I would lose my job," said Candace Waldron. "Resign already, Pamela, please!"

"She should go to jail. After all, if we did that we would definitely be in jail. Fair is fair," said Gloria Wasylyniuk.

Wallin defends that as an "activist senator," her travel to give public speeches and appearances across Canada were legitimate Senate expenses that were previously approved.

So we ask you: Is paying back the travel expenses enough, or should Wallin face criminal charges?
