One year ago this Sunday, a magnitude 8.9 earthquake triggered a massive tsunami off the coast of northeastern Japan. The disaster left 19,000 dead or missing and caused a meltdown at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear reactors, which lead to widespread evacuations in the surrounding area. The disaster was rated a seven on the International Nuclear Event Scale, the most severe level.
