Body recovered from Fresno irrigation canal near where man went missing 10 days ago

A body was recovered from a Fresno canal Thursday afternoon, believed to be the man who went missing in the waterway almost two weeks ago.

The recovery happened at 2:45 p.m. at West Nielsen and North Tielman avenues after the Fresno Police Department was told by Fresno Irrigation District workers that there was a body in the canal.

The Fresno Fire Department water rescue team arrived and recovered the body. Battalion Chief Brian Downs said the body had been in the canal “for some time.”

Downs said the workers were clearing out debris from the crates where the canal splits off and noticed the body in one of the crates.

On June 19, the water rescue team was searching for a man who disappeared in a canal full of fast-moving, cold water. The man was described to have dreadlocks and was reported to frequent the canal near High-Speed Rail construction. He was last seen under a bridge at Nielsen and Thorne.

Downs said the body recovered showed signs of detoriation.

“Our department wants to remind people that during this time of year, all the canals are full of water; the water is moving very fast,” he said. “Even one little slip in the canals ... can put yourself in grave danger.”
