Chrysler, CAW mum on fired Windsor employees

Neither Chrysler Canada or the CAW are saying much about the reasons why four employees were fired at the Windsor Assembly Plant.

It's been reported Chrysler fired the hourly employees for allegedly drinking alcohol while on the job.

“Chrysler has completed its investigation phase of the incident involving Windsor Assembly Plant employees who engaged in behaviour that was determined to be in violation of Chrysler’s Standards of Conduct. These employees have been disciplined accordingly," the company's head of communications, LouAnn Gosselin, wrote in an email to CBC News.

In the email, Gosselin had a warning for Chrysler employees.

"As is evidenced by the swift action taken in this matter, it should be clear that Chrysler does not tolerate inappropriate behaviour," she wrote. "We take great pride in our Windsor facility and the more than 4,800 people who work there every day to build a world-class product.”

The employees fired had seniority ranging from 20 to 36 years. The company issued their termination notices last month.

Since then, the CAW, which represents the fired workers, has filed grievances to try to win their jobs back.

A union official told CBC News it could be a long process.

Local 444 grievance coordinator, Mike Lovric, said he could not comment on the process and directed all inquiries to local president Rick Laporte, who was unavailable for comment.
