Composting gaining popularity in Corner Brook

Rhea Hutchings, Corner Brook's sustainability development officer, says composting is growing in popularity in the city.

The city of Corner Brook is encouraging residents to take up composting in their homes, and last week a public information session on how to use them was held at city hall.

Rhea Hutchings, the city's sustainability development officer, said there has been a significant increase in the sales of compost bins.

"We've had a partnership for the last three years with the MMSB (Multi-Materials Stewardship Board) where we're subsidizing the sale of compost bins, and to date we've actually sold a thousand bins, so that should go to show how it's growing and becoming popular here," she said.

The city has been selling the compost bins for $20 each, thanks to the subsidy with the MMSB.

Hutchings said composting is easier than most people think.

"It's real easy, actually, anybody can do it," he said. "There's a few basic steps, a little recipe, but a little bit of your time, anybody can do it."

Hutchings said the city recently received another 150 bins to sell to residents.
