Council to decide e-bike future Monday night

People who ride power-assisted bikes, more commonly known as e-bikes, are expected to arrive at Windsor City Hall en masse Monday night.

They will be objecting to a recommendation to ban the bikes from using sidewalks.

The city's environment and transportation standing committee says e-bike users should stay off sidewalks and multi-use trails.

Councillors and staff say there have been complaints from pedestrians using the trails.

The recommendation is not sitting well with e-bike users and supporters. They say its their safety that is now a concern because the city doesn't have enough bike lanes for them to use in travelling from one place to another.

Kimberly Tucker rides an e-bike. She said she putting e-bikes on the road puts her in danger.

"You put an ebike on [the road] ... you’re going to have to follow us," she said of motorists. "It’s very dangerous."

Dave Nickerson is a co-owner of E-Ride Windsor. He agrees with Tucker.

"Putting them on the road like this puts a great hazard on them and a hazard on the traffic situation, which is already strained," he said.
