CTMA Vacancier heading back to Magdalen Islands

A ferry is en route back to the Magdalen Islands, Quebec, carrying food and medical supplies.

The CTMA Vacancier left Sydney, Nova Scotia, at about 2:30 p.m. Saturday, after being re-routed from its regular crossing to Souris, P.E.I.

The ferry was on its way to Souris earlier this week when it became stuck in ice for three days off Cape Breton.

The company says it may not be able to sail between Souris and the Magdalen Islands until ice conditions improve.

Three times this winter, the ferry has needed icebreakers to help free it from heavy ice.
