Darlene Compton running for PC leadership

Darlene Compton announced her candidacy for the P.E.I. Progressive Conservative Party leadership Wednesday afternoon in Belfast.Compton said the "decision to run did not come lightly," but that government is "adrift" and power must be taken away from a "tired and disconnected crew."She said the PC party needs someone who can relate to all Islanders."Together we have much to do to build a better tomorrow for Islanders," she said. "This Island is small enough to create its own destiny, and big enough to make it happen. Join me in creating that destiny."Compton also ran in the 2011 provincial election in the Belfast-Murray River riding but was defeated by incumbent Charlie McGeoghegan by eight votes.She is the second person to announce a candidacy for the Tory leadership.On Monday, James Aylward, MLA for Stratford-Kinlock announced his intentions in Stratford.The party will choose its new leader Feb. 28 at a convention at the University of Prince Edward Island field house.
